Surfing Scheveningen

Scheveningen is a popular destination for surfers. With its beautiful beaches and consistent waves, it's a great place for surfing, no matter the season. If you fancy a bite to eat somewhere after surfing in Scheveningen, then beach restaurant Werelds is the place for you.

Why Scheveningen is *the* surfing hotspot of the Netherlands

Scheveningen isn't called the “Surf City” of the Netherlands for nothing. Nowhere else in our country will you find so many surfers in one place. This has everything to do with its location. Due to its position on the North Sea, Scheveningen receives more and higher waves than other Dutch coastal towns. Furthermore, the harbour moles and the Pier provide shelter, meaning you can often surf somewhere even in changing wind conditions. This makes the beach exceptionally versatile.

South of Scheveningen lies the Sand Motor: an artificially created sandbank that was constructed in 2011 for coastal reinforcement. A nice bonus for surfers is that this sandbank provides particularly favourable wave conditions, especially for kitesurfers. Surfing in Scheveningen is possible all year round. With the right wetsuit, you can easily enter the water even in January.

Time to surf Scheveningen

Autumn and winter are the best seasons for surfing in Scheveningen. During this period, storm periods in the North Sea create higher and more powerful waves. For advanced surfers, this is therefore the dream season. In summer, the waves are smaller and gentler. While this might sound less spectacular, for absolute beginners, these are precisely the ideal conditions to practice basic skills without being immediately swept away by big waves.

Besides the season, wind direction and tide also play a role. Offshore wind (coming from the land) creates clean, structured waves. Onshore wind makes the waves messy. Using tools like Surfline and Windguru, you can easily check the current conditions and the forecast for the coming days. At most spots in Scheveningen, an incoming tide provides higher and stronger waves. It's worth checking this before you hop on your bike.

The Pier

When people think of Scheveningen, they almost automatically think of the Pier van Scheveningen. Since the summer of 2015, the Pier has been open to the public again. The renovated Pier is a true food boulevard with a great offering. You'll find street food, terraces, restaurants, bars, shops, bungee jumping facilities, and a Ferris wheel. The Ferris wheel offers a beautiful view over the Scheveningen boulevard and the North Sea. Really into the Pier? Then there is even the possibility to spend the night in Luxe Suites.

The Pier is open 365 days a year and is freely accessible to all ages.

More watersports in Scheveningen

Surfing is the most popular water sport in Scheveningen, but it is by no means the only one.

Kitesurfing is one of the other major disciplines. The conditions around the Sand Motor are excellent for kite surfers: kite surfing is permitted in this area from mid-May to mid-September. On a nice day with good wind, you'll see more than a hundred kites in the air here. It's a sport that requires more skill and practice than wave surfing, but you can also take an introduction to it at most surf schools.

Windsurfing combines a surfboard with a sail and is ideally suited for windy conditions. Soups (Stand-up paddleboarding) is a more tranquil alternative where you paddle across the water standing on a wide board. For those who want to try the latest disciplines: winging and foiling are now also possible in Scheveningen. Scheveningen has something to offer every watersports enthusiast, regardless of age or experience level.
