Scheveningen Boulevard

Two and a half kilometres long, open all year round and always buzzing with life. The Scheveningen boulevard is more than just a promenade. It's the beating heart of the Netherlands' most popular seaside resort.

Whether you're enjoying the sea view, sitting on a terrace, shopping, visiting the Pier, or simply getting some fresh air: the boulevard offers something for everyone. And after all that enjoyment? Then Strandrestaurant Werelds awaits you on the north side of the boulevard for a delicious meal with a view of the North Sea.

A boulevard with a rich history

The promenade in Scheveningen has a peculiar origin. Scheveningen was historically a fishing village and, due to its seaside location, regularly suffered from the vagaries of the weather. When a severe storm in 1894 destroyed half the fishing fleet and households, it was the last straw. A sea wall was built to protect the village.

The wealthy tourists who came to the Kurhaus for cures at that time soon discovered that the wall was a wonderful place for a stroll. Over the course of the twentieth century, the protective sea wall thus grew into the promenade as we know it today.

In 2013, the boulevard underwent a major renovation and widening. The design is by the Spanish architect Manuel de Solà-Morales. He consciously followed the undulating line of the old dunes and created various changes in elevation so that pedestrians, cyclists, and cars do not obstruct one another. The result is a promenade that looks attractive, is pleasant to walk along, and offers more space for events and beach cafés.

The boulevard in all seasons

A common misconception about Scheveningen is that it's only worth visiting in the summer. Nothing could be further from the truth. The boulevard has its own character in every season, and that's precisely what makes it so special.

In the summer, the boulevard is buzzing with life. The beach cafés are full, the terraces are occupied, and the Pier attracts thousands of visitors a day. The beach is the domain of swimmers, surfers and sunbathers. Anyone strolling along the boulevard on a warm summer's day immediately feels why Scheveningen is the Netherlands' most popular seaside resort.

In autumn and winter, the North Sea shows its rougher side. The waves are higher, the promenade quieter and the air fresher. For surfboards Is this really the best season? For anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life for a while, a walk along the winter sea is a real pick-me-up. There's something liberating about an empty promenade with a stormy sea in the background.

Spring brings new energy again. The beach cafes are being built, the first outdoor terraces are opening, and Scheveningen is preparing for a new season. The promenade is slowly waking up, the days are getting longer, and the beach looks inviting.

The beach pavilions along the north side of the boulevard are permanently built and open all year round. This includes Strandrestaurant Werelds, which is open daily from 09:00 to 23:00 for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks. Whether the sun is shining or the wind is howling around the corners, you'll always be well looked after at Werelds.
